 Μναμοσύνας τόδε ἱερόν, ἐπεὶ ἂμ μέλληισι θανεῖσθαι.
Εἶς Ἀίδαο δόμους εὐήρεας, ἔστ’ ἐπὶ δεξιὰ κρήνα,
πὰρ δ’ αὐτὰν ἑστακυῖα λευκὰ κυπάρισσος.
ἐνθα κατερχόμεναι ψυχαὶ νεκύων ψύχονται.
Ταύτας τᾶς κράνας μηδὲ σχεδὸν ἐνγύθεν ἔλθηις.
Πρόσθεν δὲ εὑρήσεις τᾶς Μναμοσύνας ἀπὸ λίμνας
Ψυχρὸν ὕδωρ προρέον. φύλακες δὲ ἐπύπερθεν ἔασι,
Τοὶ δέ σε εἰρήσονται ἐνὶ φρασὶ πευκαλίμαισι
ὅττι δὲ ἐξερέεις Ἄϊδος σκότος ἠερόεντος.
εἶπον «ὑὸς Βαρέας καὶ Οὐρανοῦ ἀστερόεντος,
δίψαι δ’ εἰμ’ αὖος καὶ ἀπόλλυμαι, ἀλλὰ δότ’ ὦκα
ψυχρὸν ὕδωρ πιέναι τῆς Μνημοσύνης ἀπὸ λίμνης.»
καὶ δή τοι ἐλεοῦσιν ὑπὸ χθονίωι βασλῆι,
καὶ δή τοι δώσουσι πιὲν τᾶς Μναμοσύνας ἀπὸ λίμνας
καὶ δὴ καὶ σὺ πιὼν ὁδὸν ἔρχεαι ἅν τε καὶ ἄλλοι
μύσται καὶ βάχχοι ἱερὰν στείχουσι κλεινοί.



[EN] Gerardo Marotta interprets and explains an Orphic poem, that had been edited by Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli. We dedicate this to the memory of these two great men: the first for his profound learning, the second for the immense service he has done to the scholarly community.

This is sacred to Memory: When you are about to die,
you will go to the spacious halls of Hades; a spring is on the
right, and by it stands a bright cypress tree;
there the descending souls of the dead refresh themselves.
Do not go near to this spring at all.
Further on you will find, from the lake of Memory,
refreshing water flowing forth. But guardians are nearby.
They will ask you, with sharp minds,
what you seek in the misty shadow of Hades.
Say: ʺI am the child of Earth and starry Heaven;
and I am parched with thirst and I perish; but give me quickly
refreshing water to drink from the lake of Memory.ʺ
And then they will speak to the underworld king,
and then they will give you to drink from the lake of Memory,
and you, having drunk, will go along the sacred road that the
other famed initiates and bacchics travel

Hoc est sacrum Memoriae: Cum moriturus sis.
Ibis ad Plutonis amplas aedes, est ad dextram fons
iuxta quem alba cupressus stat erecta:
eo confluunt animi mortuorum refricandi causa.
Atqui huic fonti ne parum quidem appropinquaveris!
Porro invenies aquam iugem e lacu Memoriae
profluentem. Custodes autem desuper erunt,
qui te mente certa interrogabunt
quae tibi causa viae sit per Orci tenebras obscuri.
Dicito: “Filius sum Gravis Telluris et Caeli stelliferi,
siti aresco atque emorior, sed date mihi statim
bibere frigidam aquam e fonte Memoriae”
Atque tui miserentur per Deum Inferorum,
tibique dabunt bibere ex fonte Memoriae
et tandem potus ea via sacra progredieris
quam alii initiati atque Bacchi inclyti quoque calcaverunt.

[IT] Gerardo Marotta interpreta e spiega un carme orfico edito da Giovanni Pugliese Carratelli coi suoi auspici e per suo impulso. Che sia questa una consacrazione d'ambedue questi uomini alla memoria immortale; del primo per gl'immensi benifici apportati alla comunità degli studiosi; del secondo per la sua straordinaria dottrina.

A Mnemosyne è sacro questo (dettato): (per il mystes), quando sia sul punto di morire.
Andrai alle case ben costrutte di Ade: v'è sulla destra una fonte,
accanto ad essa si erge un bianco cipresso;
lì discendono le anime dei morti per aver refrigerio.
A questa fonte non accostarti neppure;
ma più avanti troverai la fredda acqua che scorre
dal lago di Mnemosyne: vi stanno innanzi custodi,
ed essi ti chiederanno, in sicuro discernimento,
perché mai esplori la tenebra dell'Ade caliginoso.
Di': “Son figlio della Greve e del Cielo stellato;
di sete son arso e vengo meno: ma datemi presto
da bere la fredda acqua che viene dal lago di Mnemosyne”.
Ed essi son misericordiosi per volere del re degli Inferi,
e ti daranno da bere (l'acqua) del lago di Mnemosyne;
e tu quando avrai bevuto percorrerai la sacra via su cui anche gli altri
mystai e bacchoi procedono gloriosi.
